Gallops Island is purchased by John Gallop.
1635
(ca.) The finest Boston Harbor pilot of his time, Gallop operates a farm on the island, a meadow on Long Island, and grazes his sheep on Nix’s mate, and maintains a home in Boston. After Gallop’s death in 1649 (1650-Sweetser), the island is purchased by “gentlemen of Quincy and Hingham.” French allies of the Colonists mount cannons here during the Revolutionary War. The island is purchased by John Newcomb in 1819, and purchased from his son by Boston in 1860.*
